The spindles box is a useful material to start playing with arithmetic. It consists of a birch wood box divided into 10 compartments numbered from 0 to 10 (the numbers are engraved on the top of the box) and a box containing 45 spindles (wooden sticks) and 8 red satin ribbons. The game is played by grouping the sticks corresponding to the number indicated in each compartment of the box. After counting, one quantity at a time, tie the sticks with a ribbon to join the units and place them back in the box. The exercise allows for self-correction, if the sashes have not been properly grouped, there will be more or fewer sashes in the box of 9 or some will be left out of the box. With the spindle wheel, the concept of 0 is easily introduced, as there will be no grouping in the corresponding box; it makes it easy to understand the association of the right quantity with the number and the concept of the whole. It encourages coordination and memory of the sequence of numbers in ascending order.
The box and spindles are all made of birch wood. The ribbons are satin, red in colour. AGE: from about 4 years old. Useful as an introduction to the study of arithmetic.
